Completed in Pori in 1989, the BePOP shopping center is widely regarded as the flagship of Finnish Postmodernism. Its richly articulated, colorful architecture continues to offer visitors a wealth of inspiring spatial and visual experiences. The main entrance is defined by a canopy supported by tall columns, which rises prominently above the surrounding roofscape, while a curved interior retail arcade cuts through the building volume. The expressive forms and bold use of color reflect architect Jyrki Tasa’s ambition to create “the opposite of dry modernism.”

Situated within the traditional urban grid, the building was the result of a winning competition entry. “At the competition stage, the design was still rather restrained, although the jury considered it open-minded and original,” Tasa recalls. “Perhaps we acted a bit like Frank Gehry in the Disney Concert Hall competition. He said that first you must win the competition—and only then can you create truly personal architecture.”

“Kilpailuvaiheessa ehdotus oli varsin kesy, joskin palkintolautakunta piti sitä ennakkoluulottomana ja omaperäisenä”

Tasa and his team have won numerous architectural competitions, many of which have been realized. Their winning entries are typically characterized by strong core concepts that persist and evolve down to the smallest details of execution. While each project is unique, the courage and playfulness that define BePOP are consistently present in their work.

“Ehkä toimimme kuten Frank Gehry Disneyn konserttitalokilpailussa. Hän sanoi, että ensin pitää voittaa kilpailu ja vasta sitten voi tehdä persoonallista rakennustaidetta. ”
