Completed in 2024 in Kotka’s Kantasatama harbor, the new main building for South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences (XAMK) brings together diverse disciplines under a single, unifying roof.

The campus accommodates education in healthcare, technology, and maritime studies. Its architecture responds to the specific needs of each field while fostering collaboration and community. A large, protective roof defines the building’s identity — beneath it, teaching spaces terrace and interconnect to form a varied, human-scale interior landscape.

Developed through close dialogue with users, the design integrates specialized facilities such as game design studios, material laboratories, and ship and ambulance simulators. At the heart of the building, the library links the levels through semi-open mezzanines, staircases, and glass partitions, encouraging informal encounters in a relaxed and open atmosphere. A calm palette of materials and colors unifies the diverse spaces and architectural forms.

The steep roof — inspired by the robust forms of harbor architecture — shapes both the city’s skyline and the spatial experience within. It gathers the varied activities of the university into a cohesive whole, achieving valuable spatial efficiency while fostering opportunities for cross-disciplinary synergy.
